about

Bloxham Tapes BT21

Bloxham Tapes is proud to announce its 21st release, presented as a limited edition Intermissive lathe cut of 33 copies: ‘Shirt of Lace’, recorded by ALISON COTTON.

An undisputed highlight of Alison’s live set is her take on this captivating song by American multi-instrumentalist Dorothy Carter, taken from her obscure 1976 album ‘Troubadour’.

Made available on her recent Sensory Leakage cassette (Zener_08; an audience recording from a solo concert in Todmorden, 2019), this is Alison’s studio take on Carter’s mesmeric composition.

It’s less a cover and much more an interpretation; a jumping-off point that’s faithful to the source material. In Alison’s hands, the temporal shackles of this song become loosened. Liberated from its rustic roots, ‘Shirt of Lace’ begins its journey out into the stars.

Minimal instrumentation (viola, chimes and Omnichord) yields maximum impact here – and atop the cleansing drones perches Alison’s magisterial vocal, surveying the widescreen cosmic psychedelia unfurling below.

Outside the walls of the ancient theatre, water can be found where there is no well, rippling ever-outwards to infinite shores…
